Japan’s Cabinet Approves Record $64 Billion Defense Budget Amid Tensions With China

Missiles, drones, and strike capabilities drive Japan’s largest-ever military budget as regional security risks intensify.

Japan’s cabinet on Dec. 26 approved a record $784 billion budget for the next fiscal year that includes all-time-high defense spending, underscoring Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s push to accelerate military expansion amid rising regional tensions with China.

The draft budget for the fiscal year beginning in April, which still requires parliamentary approval, sets defense outlays at about $64 billion, the largest in Japan’s history.

The increase is part of a multi-year plan to raise annual military spending to 2 percent of gross domestic product, a benchmark Japan pledged to meet by March—two years earlier than initially planned—under pressure from the United States and amid a deteriorating security environment in East Asia. Several killed as Iran protests over rising cost of living spread

At least five people have been killed as demonstrations over the soaring cost of living in Iran spread to more parts of the country. At least three people were killed and 17 others were injured at protests in the city of Azna in Lorestan province, some 300km (185 miles) southwest of Tehran, Iran’s semiofficial Fars news agency reported on Thursday. Videos shared online appeared to show objects in the street ablaze and gunfire echoing as people shouted: “Shameless! Shameless!” Earlier, Fars said two people were killed during protests in the city of Lordegan, about 470km (290 miles) south of the capital Tehran in the Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province. “Some protesters began throwing stones at the city’s administrative buildings, including the provincial governor’s office, the mosque, the Martyrs’ Foundation, the town hall and banks,” Fars said, adding that police responded with tear gas.
